Flight ban from southern part of Africa to the Netherlands

As of Friday 26 November, 12:00 PM (Amsterdam time), the following countries will be added to the list of very high-risk countries: South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, and Eswatini. The Dutch government has decided on this in response to the newly discovered variant of the COVID-19 virus. This flight ban will last until at least 15 December 2021.

Mandatory tests and quarantine

This means that when you travel with KLM from southern Africa, you are only allowed to return to the Netherlands by plane if this is in line with the entry restrictions of the Dutch government. You are obligated to get tested and must go into quarantine for 10 days. This can be shortened to 5 days with a negative test result from the Dutch health service GGD.

Dutch nationals & EU citizens

Dutch nationals and EU citizens in transit to the country where they live, are still allowed to travel to the Netherlands, taking these restrictions into account. This also applies to medical staff who are committed to fighting the virus. For a complete overview of the exceptions, we refer to the Dutch government. Passengers departing from the Netherlands are still allowed to travel to southern Africa.

Please note: if the Netherlands is your final destination, you can take a test at the airport immediately after arrival. The test facility is located at the gate and the employees of the health service can be recognized by their blue vests. You do not have to wait for the test results at the airport; you will receive the results later via the Dutch health service.

If you have a connecting flight, you are are also obligated to get tested.
